Floyd Grant Stewart,'s Obituary
Floyd Grant Stewart, Sr., 75, of Charlotte, died July 2, 2010 at his home. He was born on January 18, 1936 in Graham County, NC to the late Dave and Lois Stewart. Floyd graduated from West Mecklenburg High School in 1954. After serving his country in the US Army, he attended and graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in Textiles. Floyd worked for Chem Strand Chemical Company in Pensacola, FL and for the textile division of Monsanto in the New York City office before he became co-founder, co-owner, and president of Fiber and Yarn Products, Inc. in Hickory where he worked for 31 years, until the time of his death.
Floyd was a loving son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. He was an honest and hardworking man who provided for so many. It made him happy to see other people happy. He loved to see his loved ones doing well. He did not say much, but his laugh and smile said plenty.
Having played both Army and college football and having been an avid golfer, Floyd enjoyed going to football games and watching football, basketball, and golf on TV. He liked family trips to the beach and beach music. Possibly most of all, Floyd enjoyed working in his yard - and afterward, he loved to sit appreciating its beauty with his beloved golden retriever “Wally.”
Floyd is survived by his wife of 51 years, Phyllis Fincher Stewart; son, Floyd Grant Stewart, Jr. and wife, Michelle Johnson of Charlotte; daughters, Angela Elizabeth Stewart of Patterson, NY and Zina Suzanne Stewart and husband, Roberto Morales of Raleigh; sister Elva Freeman and her husband, William and brother, Fred Stewart and his wife, Sharon; grandchildren, Laura Gracen Morales, Phoebe Jo Morales, and Izabelle Frances Stewart; many nieces and nephews; and his pup, Wally.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at Christ Community Church in Huntersville, NC. The family will receive friends following the service. Prior to the memorial service, a private burial will be at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to The Smile Train or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
May the roads rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rain fall soft upon your fields
And, until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of his hand.
