Frances White Shoaf's Obituary
Laura Frances Shinn White Shoaf of Davidson was with her family as she passed away on December 31st, 2012. Preceding her in death were her parents, John and Leona Shinn, a brother, Brice Shinn and husbands Hugh Alexander White (d. 1983) and Edwin H. Shoaf, Sr. (d. 2012). Surviving Frances are her son, Allan and his wife Joyce (Davidson) along with a daughter, Laura Anne and her husband, Land Hite (Charlotte). Survivors also include her grandchildren Laura Beth and Chad Hite. Nephews Barry, Robert and John Shinn also survive. Other family members include Dr. Edwin Shoaf and his wife, Ann, of Charlotte, Rob Shoaf and his wife, Jackie, of Anchorage, Alaska and Steve Shoaf and his wife, Carole of Asheville.
Frances grew up near Troutman, North Carolina and graduated from Troutman High School and Kings Business College. After a brief tenure with Cascade Mills, she began a 39 year career as an administrative assistant at Davidson College. During her time at the college, she worked for Presidents Martin and Spencer. Most of her time at the college was with the Development Office, where she worked with Dr. Julius Melton for almost 25 years.
In addition to her devotion to Davidson, Frances was dedicated to her family, her kitchen and her garden. Her delicious cakes, pies and breads were well known throughout the Ramah and Davidson College communities. Equally well known were her gardening and floral arranging skills. Above these, she was dedicated to her God and her church, where she served as a Ramah Church Deacon and in 1994 recognized as a Life Membership of Presbyterian Women.
Burial will be private with a public memorial service held at Ramah Presbyterian Church in Huntersville at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 5th. The family will receive visitors immediately after the service.
Desired memorials may be made to Ramah Presbyterian Church or the charity of the donor’s choice.
