Garnett Slayton McCrickard's Obituary
Garnett Slayton McCrickard, 99, of Raleigh, died January 21, 2019. She was born on October 26, 1919 in Rocky Mount, VA to the late Grover Cleveland Slayton and Nannie Cooper Slayton. Garnett graduated from Rocky Mount High School. She attended Ferrum College and received her B.A. from Radford University. She did her graduate work at the University of Virginia. For five years, she taught school in Virginia and West Virginia and was principal of a junior high school in Virginia. She then worked for the Social Security Administration as a claims representative, and in December of 1958 was transferred to the Raleigh, NC district office as a field representative. Later, she became the operations supervisor and remained in that position until she retired. While there, she was the recipient of the Director’s Citation Award and Group Performance Award. Garnett was a member of Hayes Barton Baptist Church and of the Townsend Couple’s Class. She was active teaching in the children’s department and serving on various committees.
Garnett will be missed by her family who survive her including her daughter, Jane Lambert and husband Brent of Cornelius; 4 grandchildren, Austin, Blake, Connor and Barrett Lambert; daughter-in-law, Dawn McCrickard of New York City; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Aaron and son Robert.

A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Saturday, January 26, 2019 at Franklin Memorial Park in Rocky Mount, VA. A memorial service will follow at 3 PM at Hayes Barton Baptist Church.
