I am so sorry to hear this news. I joined IBM in 2019 and Gary was my manager for a short time before he retired. Even in that brief period, he left a lasting impression on me.
He was the best manager I have had in my decade-long career—kind, empathetic, always willing to listen and incredibly considerate. He was such a genuinely good human being that his kindness and character were evident even in the short time I worked with him. Calm, collected and supportive, he taught me so much in just a few months and I only wish I had the opportunity to learn more from him. Even years after his retirement, we would still talk about how exceptional he was as a manager and as a person.
To Gary’s family, please accept my deepest condolences. I hope it brings some comfort to know how positively he impacted the people he worked with and how fondly he is remembered. His legacy truly lives on through the lives he touched.
Gary was a good friend. I’ve known him since 1984. He was my first office mate at IBM Charlotte. During my five years in Charlotte, Gary and I co-captained a mixed softball team and I think a mixed volleyball team. Luckily, I got invited to a yearly group fishing trip to the outer banks which continues to this day. Gary was one of the original group members along with Jack Kirkland, Ron Deloney, Mike Hardy, Jim Archer and Greg Murphy.
I moved to Kentucky in 1989. Whenever I went on the yearly fishing trip which lasted about a week, I would stay at Gary and Kathy’s house the night before and ride out to Hatteras in Gary’s 4x4 vehicle. We had so much fun. I’m going to miss Gary a bunch.
I’ll still never forget the house in Davis lake going to church on Sundays. Mr Brooks was always so kind and calm. My house at times could be the opposite. So I always looked up to how Mr. Brooks was such a calm, kind, and caring person he was. Mr Brooks & Mrs Brooks always treated me like family when I was over there growing up. I don’t say this often but Mr Gary was a good man genuinely a kind person. I know he is with Dylan having a great time! My deepest condolences to Mrs Brooks and to Austin and my buddy Logan. I’ll always cherish those times growing up. Even though I was rebellious at times growing up I think Mr Brooks was a great role model and sewed more seeds than he even realized . A inspiration that with God you really can find inner peace! Thanks for the great memories RIP Mr Brooks you will be missed.

I was very fortunate to have been able to participate in a number of rides with Gary and his band of riding brothers and long time friends. Gary was a special individual and appeared to be the glue that held this group together. The story of how I came to be a brief part of it is long so suffice it to say that I will be forever grateful for the acceptance and camaraderie of this group.
