Georgia Davis' Obituary
Georgia Rebecca Bowen Davis, age 82 years, passed away peacefully, in her sleep on Saturday August 31, 2024, from the effects of Alzheimer's disease.
Georgia was born on September 4, 1941 in Charlotte, NC to the late Thomas Baxter "George" Bowen and Jessie McKinney "Jakie" Bowen. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Bob Davis; her sisters, Sandy Bowen Baumgarten and Sally Bowen Roberts; children, Toni Deane Davis Hanline (Mark Hanline), and Sherri Davis McConnell (Wayne McConnell); grandchildren Blakeney Hope Hanline (William Spencer), Madison Kelsey Hanline, Murphy Lee Benning (Radleigh Benning), Mallory "Krate" Hanline, Davis Kyle McConnell; great grandsons Bevan Mark Spencer and Rexford Blu Benning, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Georgia was raised in a loving home and had a lifelong connection with her sisters and parents, who supported each of them in their interests and pursuits. Georgia's parents regaled everyone with stories of her sitting at the piano playing songs by ear at age 3. As a teenager, she was the pianist for Miss Donna's School of Dance when recorded music wasn't readily available and was the organist at Parkwood Associate Reform Presbyterian Church of Charlotte. She graduated Central High School, and attended Erskine College on a music scholarship.
Georgia met the love of her life at Myrtle Beach, SC, and they have enjoyed a full and happy life together. She was an avid card player, prankster, and lover of all things fun. She played the piano at Charlotte Country Club and other restaurants and taught piano and voice for 58 years. For 18 years, her dance and cover band, G & Company, played for dances, youth conferences and corporate events. Georgia worked in wholesale jewelry and clothing which fed her love for fashion. She volunteered as youth leader, organist, choir director and teacher at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. One of her favorite titles was devoted scorekeeper of church basketball in its heyday. She and Linda Dennis started a beach trip tradition to Oak Island (formerly Long Beach, NC) in 1964. Her family continues this annual pilgrimage. The Carolina Tarheels and Carolina Panthers have both lost a true blue fan.
Music was a core part of Georgia, but it does not fully define her. She was a devoted wife, aunt, mother and obsessed grandmother who made everyone confident in how she felt about them. She was loyal to friends and family and didn't mind having a laugh at her own expense. She has touched many lives, and while we will miss having her here, we celebrate her being freed from the ills that held her back.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 7 at 1:00 p.m. sharp at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3020 Hilliard Dr., Charlotte, NC 28205. A reception will follow immediately at the church. The Dedication and interment will take place at 3:45 p.m. at Charlotte Memorial Gardens, 7632 Hood Road, Charlotte, NC.
In honor of Georgia and the devoted choir members she brought together, there will be a spontaneous performance during the funeral. It will be lead by Travis Blue. There will be no rehearsal, and we will make a joyful noise. The song is a Sally DeFord's arrangement of "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" and the link is below. All are welcome to sing and sheet music will be provided.
