Gerald Wallace Russell's Obituary
Gerald Wallace Russell Sr. "Papa G", 77, of Charlotte entered into Heaven's Gates after a short battle with cancer on April 21, 2016 at his home with his family by his side. He was born in Mecklenburg County on May 30, 1938 to the late Joyce and Mary Russell.
Gerald was a graduate from North Mecklenburg High School in 1956. After graduation he worked at Russell's Supermarket, a family owned business, before joining the Mecklenburg County Police department, where he retired as a Sergeant with 20 years of service. During his service, he especially enjoyed his position as training supervisor with the police academy. Gerald also served in the Army National Guard for many years. He was a lifetime active member of Asbury United Methodist Church. He was an award winning drag racer in his younger years and an avid hunter, Papa G's greatest love was his family. He loved his children and grandchildren like no other and took great pride in all they were involved in.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years Mary Jaqueline Russell; sons, Gerald Russell, Jr. "Skip" (Carrie) of Lincolnton, Scott Russell (Cary) of Concord, Brian Russell (Kim) of Charlotte; daughters, Tracy Faggart (Robby) of Concord, and Aimee Adams (Tim) of Charlotte; and 12 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Sunday, April 24, 2016 at James Funeral Home 10520 Arahova Dr., Huntersville, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A service to celebrate Gerald's life will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, April 25, 2016 at Asbury Methodist Church, 11724 Asbury Chapel Road. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Asbury U.M.C.
