Gloria K. Schreiber's Obituary
Gloria Kummer Schreiber
May 2, 1934 – September 11, 2023
It is with great sadness that the family announces Gloria’s passing on Monday, September 11, 2023. To know her was to love her.
Gloria was born on May 2, 1934, the daughter of German immigrants from the Saxon city of Magdeburg. She grew up in the Ridgewood section of Brooklyn. As a child, Gloria enjoyed many pursuits, including mastering the piano accordion, learning the German language, and singing with the Brooklyn Boys and Girls Chorus, most notably, for their 75th anniversary concert in New York City. Gloria also loved dancing: a requirement for her husband-to-be was that he must dance!
Upon graduation from Bushwick High School, Gloria went to work for Shields & Company, a Wall Street Brokerage firm. She was promoted several times and eventually was promoted to Executive Secretary to the founder of the firm, Paul V. Shields. This is where she met Mr. Shield’s son-in-law, Gary Cooper and golfing legend Ben Hogan!
Gloria was married to Dr. Heinz H. Schreiber for over 68 years and together they had two daughters, Herta and Margo. They made their home in Old Bethpage, NY and after 12 years, they moved to Northport, NY where Gloria’s love of music led her to being a founding member and secretary of the Northport Chorale.
Gloria loved to travel and was lucky enough to live out a life-long dream of celebrating New Year’s Eve, and dancing with Heinz in Vienna attending the Kaiserball at the Hofburg Palace.
Gloria and Heinz eventually moved to Suntree in Melbourne, Florida, where they were founding members of the Suntree Country Club. Gloria became an active member of the Brevard Community Chorus and the Brevard Symphony Orchestra South Guild. She served as secretary and coordinated many annual Banquets for the Chorus. She and Heinz were also members of the Space Coast Ski Club, and enjoyed memorable ski trips to Big Mountain, Montana, Jackson Hole, and Colorado.
Gloria was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. She is survived by her husband, Heinz, her daughters, Herta and spouse Mark, Margo, and her beautiful granddaughters, Ashley and Chelsea and her spouse Jake and nieces and nephew. She is preceded in death by her brother Fred.
We know Gloria is singing again with the Angels and lovingly tending to her heavenly garden. We will forever cherish her bright sparkle and smile.
James Funeral Home of Huntersville is serving the family.
