Harry S. Kirk Sr.'s Obituary
Mr. Harry S. Kirk, Sr., 92, of Charlotte, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, January 1, 2023.
Harry was born August 1, 1930 to John A. and Cora Suther Kirk. He grew up on a dairy and produce farm. He was appointed to the board of directors of Carolina Farmers Mutual in Newell and Mallard Creek communities. He graduated from Newell High School and was an alumnus of Charlotte College (now UNC Charlotte). Harry worked as a licensed insurance agent for 40 years and was the manager and secretary treasurer of Mecklenburg Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company. He served for 24 years as founding director of Alliance Mutual Insurance Company of Greensboro, NC. In 2000 he was appointed to the board of directors with the merger of Carolina Farmers Mutual Insurance. Harry was a founding board member of the University City Y.M.C.A. He served for six years on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission. Harry earned a 39 year service award from the U.S. Postal Service by Postmaster Luther P. Starnes, Jr. and was awarded the N.C. Outstanding Carrier for 1988. Harry was a lifetime member of Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church where he taught junior high Sunday School class, served as deacon, chairman of the board, elder, clerk of session, chair of finance committee and committee of interim associate pastor.
Harry and Margaret (the love of his life) enjoyed traveling the U.S. and Europe. They loved year-round trips to their second home in North Myrtle Beach. Harry served many years as president of the 48th homeowners association.
Mr. Kirk was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Sara Louise Killian, brothers; John “Gene” Kirk and James “Bill” Kirk.
Mr. Kirk is survived by his wife, Margaret, their children, Harry Kirk, Jr. (Lisa), Monie Alexander (Harvey), Susan Saviano (Dave) Sharon Benfield (Craven), grandchildren; John Harvey Alexander (Jenny), Jason Alexander, Morgan Dube (Arthur), Andrew Alexander (Stacey), Cayce Kirk, Brittany Ashworth (Heath), Taylor Jones, Kevin Kirk (Brittany), Austin Alexander (Aurianna), Nathan Benfield (Jordan) and great-grandchildren, Amber Alexander, AJ Alexander, Kylie Alexander, Oliver Alexander, Wren Alexander, Hattie Alexander, Simon Alexander, Jaxson Dube, Wyatt Benfield and Behr Alexander.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 5 at Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Committal service will be held at Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
