Hazel Barnette's Obituary
Hazel Wiggins Barnette, 93, of Concord died November 23, 2022 at the Tucker Hospice House. She was born on December 2, 1928 in Mecklenburg County to the late Luren "Lury" W. and Grace Wallace Wiggins.
Hazel first and foremost was a wonderful wife and mother to her family and she and Hughie were married for over 74 years. A perfect homemaker, she was always inviting neighbors, friends, and family over for meals and fellowship. She retired from the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System after 25 years of working in the cafeteria at North Mecklenburg High School.
Her home church was Prosperity ARP Church but shortly after her marriage to Hughie they became members of Asbury United Methodist Church. Anytime the church doors were open she was in attendance and was active in all aspects of the church ministry including the choir and the United Methodist Women. She especially enjoyed participating every year in the “Parade of Tables” sponsored by the women of the church. Her children always thought her table was the prettiest one.
She loved music and singing and was a member of the North Mecklenburg Community Chorus/ Community Singers of Lake Norman for 45 years.
Although many may feel it’s impossible for one woman to live out Proverbs 31, her family, friends and community have experienced her powerful example of service, love and hope – “Many women do noble things but you surpass them all.”
Survivors include her husband Hughie M. Barnette; sons, Allen (Peggy) of Leland, Michael of Raleigh, and Paul (Mary) of Abbington, VA; daughters, Patricia Putnam (Ed) of Charlotte and Bonnie Hutchins (Kermit) of Cherryville; sister, Suggie Christenbury of Concord; 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her sisters, Kathleen Bustle, Ruth Beard, and Ruby Little; brothers, Calvin Wiggins and Bill Wiggins; and grandson, David Barnette.
We extend our thanks and appreciation to the doctors and nurses who helped care for her and especially the angels at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Asbury U.M.C.
A funeral service will be held at Asbury U.M.C. at 3 PM Sunday, November 27 with Rev. Gary Sowell officiating. Visitation will be 2-3 Prior in the sanctuary and burial will follow in the church cemetery.
James Funeral Home of Huntersville is serving the family.
