Helen DeWitt Short
Helen Short, of Mooresville, went to be with her Lord on January 26, 2013. She was the daughter of the late Rose Anderson DeWitt and the late Walter Partridge DeWitt. Helen was born on November 10, 1918 and grew up in Wellsburg, West Virginia, graduating from Wellsburg High School in 1936. In 1941 she received a flight training scholarship under the Civilian Pilot Training Program earning a pilot's license. This flight experience later secured her a position at the Allison Division of General Motors in Indianapolis, Indiana where she tested airplaine engines during World War II. Her other work experiences included serving as office personnel at the West Virginia Department of Public Assistance, Sterling House Community Center in Stratford Connecticut, and the American Shakespeare Festival Theatre of Stratford, Connecticut.
Helen wed Laurence B. Short in 1949 and the couple moved to Schenectady, New York and later to Stratford, Connecticut where they would raise a daughter and reside for forty years. Helen moved to the Mooresville area in 1992. She lived a life of devotion and kindness to others serving as a PTA president, Brownie Troop leader, and Sunday School teacher. After moving to North Carolina, she found her niche as a volunteer with Our Towns Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Davidson/Cornelius where she served for many years. She was also a dedicated and active member of Rehobeth United Methodist Church.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Laurence B. Short and brother, C. W. DeWitt. She is survived by her daughter, Rosalie S. Sailstad and husband Jack of Mooresville; granddaughter, Candace S. Jackson and husband John of Fuquay-Varina, Brother Paul DeWitt of Speedway, Indiana and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will take place at Rehobeth United Methodist Church in Terrell, North Carolina on Saturday, February 2 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends following the service.
