Helen Stillwell Gant's Obituary
Helen Stillwell Gant, 90, of Huntersville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 12, 2017.
She was born January 29th, 1927; daughter of Bessie Regans Stillwell and Camie Stanhope Stillwell.
She graduated from Long Creek High School and attended King's College. Early in life, she worked for Lance Inc. as a secretary. She loved playing basketball, both on her high school team, and for the Lance company team.
In her 90 years as a member in the Long Creek community, she was a faithful member of Huntersville First Baptist Church. She served by visiting shut-ins, teaching Sunday School, and working with her WMU circle. Known throughout the community for her "cold oven" pound cakes, she was ever ready to bring a pound cake to an event, a family in need, or a fund raising cause - usually donating 3 or 4 cakes. She loved her church and Sunday School class and spent many happy hours in fellowship with her fellow seniors of the Spurgeon Dorton Class.
Twice retired from Mercy Hospital in Charlotte, NC, "Miss Helen" touched the lives of many with her kindness, patience and ever present smile. Both in Hospital Admissions, and later at the front reception desk, lives were brightened because of her.
Helen loved her home state of North Carolina. She especially enjoyed the beauty of the beach and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Nature and wild animals were dear to her heart and never ceased to bring her joy. Through photography, she shared her joy with others.
She was always willing to sit and visit, take a friend to an appointment, or drive them to enjoy scenery.
She often gave freely, not expecting to be repaid.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, 1 brother - Donald Sydney Stillwell, 4 sisters- Annie Lee Hill, Jean Stillwell Miller, Ruth Stillwell Masarachia, and Bertha Rae Pridgen. She is survived by her beloved son, Stan Gant and wife Kathy Hedrick Gant of Charlotte, her cherished grandson, Jared Gant and his wife Bayleigh Davis Gant of Franklin, NC as well as nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
A funeral service will be held at 2 PM Monday, April 17 at First Baptist Church Huntersville with Rev. Tina Burleson officiating. Visitaiton will be 1-2 PM prior. Burial will be at Gilead Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Huntersville.
The family thanks the special people who have helped care for her for the last year and the wonderful nurses and staff of the Harris Hospice Unit at Novant Presbyterian in Charlotte.
