Herbert "Herb" Nelson's Obituary
Herbert E. “Herb” Nelson, 86, of Charlotte, NC, died Thursday, March 16, 2017.
Born in 1931 in Brooklyn, NY, he resided in Morris and Bergen Counties, NJ, until he moved permanently to Florida in 1996.
Herb retired from North Jersey Media Group as corporate secretary and assistant to the chairman of the board, and was honored with the Chairman’s Award at his retirement in 1992.
While in New Jersey he served as president of library boards in Lincoln Park and Park Ridge, and was a member of the committee planning for the first municipal library in Lincoln Park. He also served as an officer of the Lincoln Park Democratic Club and as Democratic municipal chairman until he moved to Park Ridge where he was a parishioner and Eucharistic minister at Our Lady of Mercy R.C. Church. Herbert served as a 10-year member of the Northgate Condominium Association board when he moved to Washington Twp. in 1985.
During his career Herb served numerous organizations in addition to an advisory board at Bergen Community College, a discussion leader at the American Management Association, and a founding member of Male Secretaries of America.
In retirement, Herb served as a Eucharistic minister in the chaplaincy program at Bergen Pines County Hospital. In Venice, Florida, he was the first editor of the Epiphany Star, the newsletter of Epiphany Cathedral, before transferring to Our Lady of Lourdes R.C. Church where he served as a Eucharist minister. He was a member of the Golf Green Condominium Association board, serving in every office over 11 years.
In 2003, Herb returned to work as a caregiver at Home Instead Senior Care in Sarasota. He was named Caregiver of the Year in 2007 for commitment and service to the company’s older adult clients.
Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, June, and their daughter, Janet Nelson Schneyer.
Mr. Nelson is survived by a daughter, Lynn Nelson of Charlotte, NC, two sons; Gerard (Arlene) of Mahwah, NJ, Christopher (Tiffany) of Park City, UT, grandchildren; Justin, Lauren, Christina, Diana, Michael, Daniel, William, and Caitlin.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
