Hilda Mayes' Obituary
Hilda Howard Mayes, 86, of Huntersville, died February 17, 2013 at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House after a brief illness and surrounded by her three children. She was born on June 16, 1926 in Lincoln County to the late Violet Derr Howard and Aubrey Howard.
She graduated from Central High School in Charlotte in 1944. She loved and was extremely devoted to Ramah Presbyterian Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher, scout leader, (was one of founders of the scout program), youth advisor, Elder, Clerk of Session, numerous committees and especially loved her Sunday School Class and Circle.
She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 86.
Rock Springs Camp Meeting was held close to her heart.
She trailblazed as the first female officer of the Mecklenburg County Democratic Party however in recent years she became concerned that her party had abandoned some of its historical values.
She was an administrative assistant to family friends at Smith's Nursery where she shared her love for and talent with flowers.
She retired in 1989 as a Mecklenburg County Magistrate.
She was married for 46 years to James Coy Mayes. Their passion for life and love for each other shined to all that they met. They are now together forever.
She loved attending baseball games, and dance recitals in which her children and grand children participated.
Survivors include her sons, Terry Mayes and wife Susan of Huntersville and Tim Mayes and wife Pat of Huntersville; daughter, Gina Mayes Harris and husband Jeff of Davidson; sister Janet Howard Knox and husband Hub, half siblings, and 6 grandchildren, Adam (Audra), Todd (Ellyne), Matthew (Roberta), Luke, Anna, John and her nephews.
Memorials may be made to Ramah Presbyterian Church for the Christian Education enrichment, 14401 Ramah Church Road, Huntersville, NC 28078.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at James Funeral Home, 10520 Arahova Dr., Huntersville.
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM Wednesday at Ramah Presbyterian Church with Rev. George Slaton and Rev. Harold Hudson officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
