Hub Knox's Obituary
Herbert Brice Knox, “Hub/Herb”, of Cornelius, NC died Saturday, May 31. He was born on December 2, 1923 in Mecklenburg County to the late Robert Brice and Annie Smith Knox.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He enjoyed nothing more than being with family. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed gardening, rabbit hunting, coaching youth baseball, drinking coffee with his friends at McDonald’s and spending afternoons on the lake with his family on his pontoon boat.
He was an active member of Bethel Presbyterian Church where he had served as an elder, worked with Youth club and taught the adult “Hub Knox” Sunday School class for many years. At Bethel he was known by many as “the first person” who introduced himself and welcomed them to the Church.
Hub served his country in World War II as a tank driver with the 692nd Tank Destroyer Unit under Patton’s Army. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was involved in liberating the death camps of Dachau. Hub received the Distinguished Service Cross and Bronze Star. Later in life, one of his favorite past times was enjoying the many friendships of fellow veterans he met at Richard’s Coffee Shop in Mooresville. He also enjoyed attending fish fry’s at the local American Legion #86.
After the war, Hub attended Presbyterian Junior College (later named St. Andrews) in Laurinburg where he was captain of the baseball, football and basketball teams and was All State in each. In 1948 he was awarded the Al Gibson Athletic Trophy and was later inducted into the St. Andrews Athletic Hall of Game.
“Herb” retired from an enjoyable career of over 30 years with Ralston Purina.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Janet; son, Herbert Brice Knox, Jr. (Buster) and wife Mandy; daughter, Karen Beard and husband David; grandchildren, Matt Beard and wife Amber, Kelly West and husband Chad, and Scott Lipe; great-grandchildren, Emma Grace and Kenzie Beard, Brice and Kori West; brother, Max Knox and wife Joan. He was preceded in death by infant granddaughter, Jamie Erin Beard, his sister, Jean Lowrance and brother, Carlyle Knox.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 2, 2014 at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 19920 Bethel Church Road, Cornelius, NC 28031. Visitation will follow. Burial will be at 10:30 prior in the church cemetery.
