James Baldwin Hankins' Obituary
James Baldwin Hankins, 87 years old and the patriarch of his family, passed away on May 18th, 2021 at his Huntersville home, surrounded by four generations of loved ones.
He was born on June 11th, 1933 in Baltimore, MD to the late Ray and Caroline Hankins, and is also preceded in death by three siblings: William, Clifton and Susie.
Known as Pete to his friends and Pop to his relations, he is survived by his wife of 68 years, Joyce Brack Hankins; his two sons, Scott and Steven Hankins; Steve’s wife, Susan; five grandchildren: Scott’s sons Eric and Craig Hankins; Steven and Susan’s children, Todd Hankins, Keleigh Nichols and Melissa Sannes; and three young great-grandchildren: Hunter and River Nichols and Sophia Sannes. Pop was a proud grandfather, and especially happy to enjoy his great-grandchildren, who provided him with much laughter.
Pete and Joyce moved from their long-time home, Bel Air, MD, to Huntersville in 1998 to be close to their family after both sons migrated there, and in NC, Pete continued his life-long career of working with heavy machinery in the construction and manufacturing industries.
Pete was a member of the U.S. Air Force and served in the Korean War. In Huntersville, he bonded with other veterans at the local Legion. His many friends there shared his love of NASCAR and horse racing.
Pete will be dearly missed by his constant companion, Joyce. The two grew up as neighbors on the same street, Overbrook Rd in Baltimore County, and started dating at the age of fifteen.
Pete valiantly beat cancer several times over the last decade. He died of natural causes.
A private memorial is being planned at the home of Steven and Susan.
Memorials may be made to Novant Hospice, PO Box 33549, Charlotte NC 28233.
James Funeral Home is serving the family.
