James Mullis' Obituary
James Day Mullis, 84, of Charlotte passed away peacefully at home February 22, 2022 with his wife by his side after a brief bout with cancer.
Jim was born in Lenoir NC to James Dennis (Pat) and Mayhew Day Mullis. As a boy he loved to take his dog and gun to travel the foothills of the North Carolina mountains, exploring nature and occasionally bringing home a squirrel or rabbit for dinner. After graduation from Lenoir High School, Jim went on to attend NC State University but then chose to enlist in the Army where he proudly served his Country for 4 years, ending his tour in Thule Greenland before coming home.
Jim loved competition shooting as well as building and modifying motorcycles and cars for speed. He raced both and set a record in motorcycle drag racing. He loved his Mustangs and was never afraid of how fast either would go. The faster the better.
Through his career he was a draftsman for Rocky Mountain Log Homes, drove a truck back and forth from North Carolina to California, and retired from Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement as assistant Chief Building Inspector after 20 years.
While working for the County Jim met the love of his life, Gigi, who worked for the County as well. After retirement, Jim enjoyed taking care of their yard which he took great pride in as well as helping neighbors or others who were in need. He loved taking his nightly walk and enjoyed the interactions of talking to various neighbors who all knew him lovingly as “Mr. Jim.” When they did not see him they would circulate conversations to make sure he was ok.
He is preceded in death by an infant son James Jr, and parents Pat and Mayhew Mullis.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Virginia “Gigi” Mullis, his daughter, Shel Mullis from Wake Forest, his son, Jason Mullis, from Kannapolis, stepson Josh Richardson of Charlotte, stepdaughters Angie Outlaw (husband Josh) of Indian Trail, and Hannah Richardson of Charlotte and grandchildren, Jeremy and Jackson Mullis, Tyler, Madelyn, Maleya and Jaiden Richardson, Brenden and Luke Outlaw, Anthany Flowe and Khy’Ier Shipp; and his mother-in-law, Peggy Rhyne.
Jim’s funeral service will be held at Northdale Baptist Church, 8104 Statesville Rd, Charlotte, NC 28269 with visitation to begin at 2:00pm and homegoing service at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Northdale Baptist Church or Hospice Palliative Care Charlotte Region, PO Box 470408, Charlotte NC 28247.
Jim will be missed but not forgotten by the many he leaves behind.
