Jane Thornhill Cobb's Obituary
Jane has been called home by God to be with her Lord and Savior. Among many others she will be reunited with Hobby her beloved husband of 63 years. She is survived by son Steve (Erica), daughter Lisa (Jeff, deceased), and son David (Lorene). Her six grandsons were a constant source of joy in her life. Jarryd (Julia) Butler, Owen (Sarah) Cobb, Stephen (Cameron) Butler, Wade (Meghan) Cobb, Hollis and Camden Cobb each made Jane’s life sweeter. Three great grandchildren added even more love to her days. She was always thrilled to be with Matthew Butler and Leo and Aidan Cobb.
As a lifelong faithful Christian Jane served as an Elder at First Presbyterian Church in Metuchen, N.J. She also founded a Prayer Group more than 20 years ago at her cherished church of 43 years Unity Presbyterian. Her love for Jesus never waned as she traveled through life in this world.
It was a blessing to grow up in a household with Jane as a mother. Not only was Jane a winner of multiple beauty courts while at Central High she was also the southern belle of her New Jersey community. Her home was a magnet for neighborhood children. As the years went by this became the case with high school friends as well. Summers were spent at Woodside Swim Club which was heaven on earth to the entire family. She was also a constant and devoted presence at sporting events her children were involved in.
Jane was an exceptional tennis player winning dozens of tournaments. Whether singles, doubles, or mixed doubles. Alongside Hobby titles were a consistent part of her life for well over a decade. Jane also was a middle school teacher and coached women’s high school tennis and softball.
Jane was a lover of all things sports, but her heart belonged to Davidson basketball. Her passion for the game started when she began dating Hobby, attending all his games, and continued throughout her lifetime. Jane continued to have season tickets and could still be seen at Davidson games cheering on the team and yelling at the refs!
For 35 years her favorite place on earth was Fripp Island, S.C. Whether entertaining family and friends, playing with grandchildren, or golf cart rides counting deer, there was never a dull moment. She had a passion for hunting seashells. The knowledge she gleaned over time made her an expert at identifying shells. An extraordinary collection resulted from the dedication to shelling she displayed over the years.
Jane loved her home, The Pines, and considered all her friends there, family. Her favorite activities were Trivia and Rummikub, and she was always ready to play at any time. One well kept secret from Jane’s children was the way she constantly tore around on her motorized scooter. Rumor has it that anyone sharing a hallway with her at The Pines was terrified. They started handing out speeding tickets due to her fun loving behavior. Multiple memories were shared by fellow residents but the one universal was scooter stories.
