Jay Mack Oehler's Obituary
Jay Mack Oehler, 83, of Charlotte, born December 11, 1928 passed away peacefully at his home November 4, 2012 with his loving family by his side. His parents were James Henry and Sarah Jane Kirk Oehler. He graduated from Derita High School in the class of 1948. Jay Mack and wife, Jackie Turton Oehler, were very instrumental in setting up reunions and breakfast meetings for his class and Jackie’s class of 1947. He and Jackie met in high school and were married in 1949. Jay Mack retired from Southern Bell after 33 years service. While working in PBX, he acquired the name “JMO The Old Pro” as he was always able to clear the troubles in the equipment. He was instrumental in installing the first 911 system in Charlotte. After retiring he and Jackie opened a business called Universal Phone Systems and was soon joined by his nephew, Bill Penninger. The company name was later changed to Universal Voice & Data.
He was a lifelong member of Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church where he served as both Deacon and Elder. He belonged to the Robinson - Frazier Sunday school class. At one time he encouraged the young people who had stopped coming to church and Sunday school to come back and from those he organized a Sunday School class.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Carl Mack Oehler, 3 brothers and 1 sister.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by sisters Tillie Mullis and Elizabeth Westmoreland, sons, William Michael (Alice), Larry Wayne (Lisa), daughter Connie Oehler Klein, grandchildren Angie Wilson, (who Jay Mack and Jackie raised as their own), Jason, Ben, Joshua, Ryan and Alayna, great grandchildren, Rhett, Jaylen, Jackson, Brooke, Raelyn and Calla as well as many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
