Jim Gant's Obituary
James Derward Gant, 88 of Charlotte, Servant of the Lord Jesus Christ, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away at Huntersville Hospice House on May 24th, 2014. He was born April 3rd, 1926 in Statesville, NC to the late Dewey Spencer and Ruby Busick Gant, and grew up in Huntersville, NC. He proudly served his country in the US Navy during World War II. He is survived by his wife of 38 years Allyne; son Stan and wife Kathy; grandson James Jared and fiance Bayleigh Davis; brothers Harry and wife Eloise, Glenn and wife Peggy, Spencer and wife Harriet; sister Letitia (Tish) and late husband Merle; and many other family members and special friends.
When many men looked to escape the difficulties and realities of life, Jim Gant looked straight to the Author of All Life for strength and perseverance; His remarkable relationship with Christ continues to richly bless many lives.
He cut and milled timber with his dad as a young teenager through his late twenties. He then drove for Pilot Freight Carriers as a long distance truck driver until he retired in 1983. He served Cook's Memorial Presbyterian Church as a Deacon and an Elder. He was an esteemed brother of Long Creek Masonic Lodge #205 and was a member of the Long Creek Eastern Star, Chapter 151.
He was fit and strong from a lifetime of exemplary work and wise, honorable living. He disdained pride and arrogance, deeply appreciated love and kindness and always drew strength from gentleness and personal conviction.
Make no mistake - he wasn't all work with no play. He danced like there was no tomorrow; laughed often, loud, and easily. His time spent with friends and family was always geared toward fun and happiness.
The family would like to thank his very special caregiver, Melissa Funderburk for her beautiful loving care given in his time of need and his dedicated, caring Hospice nurse Martha Gilbert and volunteer, C.J. who comforted him toward the end of his life. The family is deeply appreciative for all the wonderfully caring professionals at Huntersville Hospice House as well as the support of family and friends.
His family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 27th, at 1 PM at Cook's Memorial Presbyterian Church (Fellowship Hall). His funeral service will follow at 2PM in the church sanctuary officiated by pastor T.J. Thompson. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn West.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Charlotte or Cook’s Memorial Presbyterian Church.
