Joan Lahmann Logerwell's Obituary
Beloved mother of son Lowell August and daughter Suzanne Alice, “Joanie” passed away at the age of 82,
on July 29,2013. She taught her children well about kindness to animals, good sportsmanship, respect for the Logerwell environment, and social justice. An avid equestrian and swimmer, she attended NYU and had studied early childhood development. She worked many years as a librarian in Port Jefferson, NY, Cape May, NJ, Tampa, FL, and retired from the UGA Gwinnett college library where she enjoyed working with students of all ages. She made sure her kids learned to swim and sail, and was firm about our learning to ride and care for horses. For a few years she bred American Quarter Horses in Southold, NY, where she was also active with the First (Unitarian) UniversalistChurch. She was dismayed at how in the span of just a few decades, the coastline and beaches of her well-loved Eastern Long Island have deteriorated. She loved the water and lived many summers on Port Jeff Harbor (NY), Huntington and NorthportBays.
Born on January 30, 1931 to successful German immigrants in Huntington, NY, yet she survived a cruel childhood, saved by her faith in Jesus Christ, help from watchful schoolteachers, and the shelter provided by her beloved old Grossvater August Lahmann, in the church he helped build, St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran of Huntington. We remember fondly how all the kids wherever we lived would say she was a “cool mom!” and everybody wanted her applesauce. After a brief and boring retirement in Florida, she moved to Charlotte, where she enjoyed the local arts and culture. In her final years she spent time reading, and listening to jazz music. We miss you Mom, and someday we will gather together again. A private farewell was held at James Funeral Home. Donations in memoriam to the Levine & Dickson Hospice House (Huntersville, NC) are deeply appreciated.
