Joanne Marie Cook's Obituary
Joanne Marie Cook, 64, of Charlotte, N.C. passed away on Saturday, September 20, 2014.
She was born to the late Carl and Beverly Stone, on February 15, 1950 in Harpursville, New York. She graduated from Windsor High School in 1968 and married Robert W. Cook on June 27, 1970. The couple had two sons, the late Bradley C. Cook, born in 1977 and Christopher W. Cook, born in 1979.
Joanne enjoyed a long career in nursing; first, as an RN and later as a Nurse Practitioner. She received her BSN and NP degrees from Binghamton University. She used her medical knowledge and her loving heart to care for her patients in a way that was not easily forgotten. Although she worked at a number of Hospitals during her career, most of her time as an RN was spent at Margaretville Memorial Hospital, in Margaretville, N.Y. While there she worked in various positions including as a floor nurse, a nursing administrator, and an ER nurse. After being licensed as a Family Nurse Practitioner, she worked in the G.I. department at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, N.Y.
Before settling in upstate New York, she spent short stents living in New Mexico, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. During the many years she spent living in Roxbury N.Y., she was an active member of the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, spent large amounts of her time as an emergency medical technician on the volunteer rescue squad, and enthusiastically attended many of her sons various sporting events. As an emergency room nurse and EMT in a small community, she had the privilege and opportunity to save lives and impact individuals and families throughout her community and the surrounding area.
After moving to Charlotte, N.C. to be closer to her family, Joanne was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, where she enjoyed meeting new people and sharing life with her Sunday school class. She also continued in the nursing field as a nurse educator. She enjoyed traveling, good seafood, camping in their RV, their beloved dog, Ollie, and spending time with her granddaughters.
Joanne is survived by her husband and son noted above, along with her daughter-in-law, Mandy D. Cook, and her three granddaughters, Addison, Emily, and Sophia. Her family and friends will remember her for her loving heart and for the courageous battle she fought against cancer.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 25, 2014 at the North Campus of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, located in Charlotte N.C. Another memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on October 10, 2014 at the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, in Roxbury N.Y.
