Joel was born on August 31, 1939 to the late James Powell, Sr and Annie Dove Brown Hayes. Joel was preceded in death by his parents and beloved sister Gurtis Ann Hayes.
While living in Sacramento, California, Joel and Babe founded Joel Powell’s Non- Denominational Church for Christ. His ministry path moved him to Georgia, then to Charlotte, NC. Joel was a servant who helped everyone, which led him to found a street ministry that gave people the opportunity to receive Christ in their lives. He met Pastor Charles Hunter at The 940 Brevard Street Apartments and began helping Pastor Hunter’s ministry flourish by assisting him in various ways to spread the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Joel was a quiet man, but a giant in the Lord and spoke only when he had something to say.
