Joel McConnell's Obituary
On June 27, 2019 Joel Caldwell McConnell made his heavenly transition to his eternal home. He was 91 years old. Joel was born August 9, 1927 in Cornelius, North Carolina and remained living in the town his entire life. He served aboard the USS Anacosta during WWII and received an accounting degree from Kings Business College upon his discharge. On July 3, 1948 he married his lifelong love, Doris Dorton, and together they raised six children.
Joel was a lifelong member of Mt Zion United Methodist Church and remained an active parishioner throughout his 91 years. He had many interests and hobbies; among them golf, gardening, sitting on his front porch enjoying nature and talking to neighbors, and watching Braves games. However his biggest passion was his family, and he found great joy in family beach trips and spending time with his grandchildren.
Joel was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, and two sons, Joey and John.
He is survived by his four children, Vickie Zettl (Matt), David McConnell (Tammy), Dan McConnell (Kay), Linda McConnell (Jonathan Priest); 5 grandchildren, Brad McConnell (Karen), Lauren Hollis (Micah), Katherine Muros (Chris), David McConnell Jr, and Matthew McConnell; and 7 great grandchildren, Joseph, Luca, Ella Grace, Nicki, Emmy, Nolan and Lawson.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 29 at Mt Zion United Methodist Church in Cornelius at 12:00 pm. Visitation will follow in the family life center. Burial will be private in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to The Family YMCA of Greater Augustaʼs program “A Place to Dream”. This program purchases beds for children without them, and Joel was extremely proud of his son Dan for heading up this cause. Donations may be mailed to 1058 Claussen Road, Augusta GA 30907 or at www.thefamilyy.org
