I don’t know what to say.
John was my friend for twenty years and still, I don’t know what to say.
What words does one use when there are no words?
One of the great honors of my life was receiving John home along with his family and our old Charlie 1 teammates and laying him to rest. I’ll carry that with me always.
John and I once responded to a call for service at the home of an older couple. I don’t remember their names and I don’t remember their faces. I don’t even remember the nature of the call. But once we handled it I moved on to the next one and John stayed behind. After that he checked on them often and over the years he grew very close to them. He became a son to them.
There are more exciting stories but I mention that one because oftentimes when someone passes we hear the standard, cliché things like, “He had a big heart.” and “He would give anyone the shirt off his back.” or “He was a good cop.” Know that when those things are said about John they are unreservedly, unequivocally true.
John was at my house on December 19, 2019 for a visit while he was home for Christmas. He often made the rounds to see his friends when he was in town. We talked about his wonderful mother and about how his father was a penny pincher- he wished he would spend more on himself. We talked about the patrol days and he filled me in on what some of the old crew was up to. He was really good about keeping up with those guys.
We didn’t take a picture and we didn’t talk about the next time we might see each other. But I remember that quick, bro-hug just before he walked out the door that day. And I swear if I thought it could be the last time I would see him, I would’ve made that one count.
We love you, John
As one who had the privilege of knowing John from kindergarten through high school, I feel honored to have witnessed his brilliance and vivid personality for such a long and ever changing part of his life. Yet, I'm overwhelmingly sad, knowing I was unable to experience the tenacious, caring, and vivacious leader he became.
The qualities, so pivotal to his character, there from the beginning, always growing in there depth and capacity, impacting innumerable lives... I simply wish I had been able fully know the incredible man he was to his family, his Hawaiian friends and family, his ATF colleagues, mentors, and mentees. Whether in Charlotte, DC, Maui, or the numerous other places gifted with his presence, we were all blessed to call him friend.
To his family, I pray for strength through the devastation and thank you for gifting us John. To those who held his highest esteem and were closest to his heart, I pray peace embrace you until you are able to feel its presence.
And to John, rest in peace, dear friend, knowing you were valued, respected, and loved by many.

John, you touched me & my life more than you know, & that WILL live on, always---you helped me through the most trying of tough horrific times, & we've repaid the favor over & over in the years since then. I will miss you more than you know--one of my dearest true friends, w/whom I could share all w/o fear of judgement. God gave us a new amazing angel in you, so I'll try not to be angry nor sad, but thankful. John was always a welcomed presence in our busy office. He worked closely with our firearms and evidence units and was always willing to answer any questions we may have had for him. His friendly, kind, and helpful way was always appreciated by our staff. John was a friend, part of our MPD family, and always will be.
