John Campbell's Obituary
John D. Campbell, Sr., 78, of Huntersville died February 12 at his home surrounded by family. He was born on April 20, 1942 in Iredell County to the late Harvey and Alene Campbell.
John was a joy filled man who enjoyed life to the fullest. He was known for his brilliant smile and bellowing laugh. John enriched the lives of everyone he met, often assigning nicknames that seemed to last a lifetime. John loved to sing and always had a song in his heart. He led the choir at Lakehaven Community Church where he served faithfully as an ordained Deacon for 39 years. He was a faithful servant of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, never thinking of himself and always putting others first.
John was a devoted husband married to the apple of his eye, Linda, for 56 wonderful years. They shared so many wonderful adventures together including camping in the Everglades and motorcycle rides to the Outer Banks. They enjoyed a second home in Sunset Harbor, NC where they made lifelong friends. He was a model father and loved his children unconditionally and told them so every chance he got. John loved being a grandfather, and to his grandchildren and great-grandson, he was known simply as their “Poppie”. He always had time for family fun including playing down on the floor with every one of his babies. John walked this life obediently in the footprints of his Lord and, while he will be deeply missed, we know that he is now walking side by side with his Lord.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Henson Campbell; son, John D. Campbell, Jr. and wife Gatewood of Huntersville; daughters, Sonya McGraw and husband Jay of Gastonia, and Dena Benfield and husband Gerry of Mt. Holly; sisters, Sylvia Hager of Huntersville and Betty Kirby of Charlotte; and grandchildren, Campbell (Katlin), Madison (Dakota), Sawyer, Molly (Andrew), Savannah, Justin and Hunter, and great-grandson, Brody.
