John Edward Langfeldt's Obituary
John Langfeldt, 81, of Huntersville, NC died in his sleep May 5th, 2018. John was born on June 23, 1936 to Alan and Elizabeth Langfeldt of Great Falls, Montana.
John graduated from the Montana School of Mines with a BS degree in metallurgical engineering. Upon graduation, he worked as a sales engineer, moving frequently to various cities within the United States. While in San Francisco he met Mable Caroline Blum (Caroline) whom he later married. They moved to Pleasanton, CA in 1973, where they settled and raised their family.
Together they had three children, and he was a dedicated father to his children. In 1974, John’s 4-year-old middle child Rebecca was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Her survival and quality of life was his primary passion and mission for the next forty years. This passion and drive not only helped create and improvement programs and safety nets for Rebecca, but also others like her. East Bay Innovations were tremendous partners of his in this mission. Also, he was inspired to volunteer as treasurer to Housing, Inc. a Bay Area non-profit providing affordable housing to developmentally disabled adults, allowing Rebecca and others like her to live with dignity.
In the 1970’s, he left his position at Hexcel corporation and struck out on his own, opening a small lighting fixture company in Dublin, CA called Village Lighting. While at times it was unclear if he owned the store or the store owned him, he operated it until his retirement in the mid 90’s. After Rebecca’s passing in 2013, he relocated to North Carolina to be closer to his children and grandchildren.
John is survived by his two children Scott Langfeldt and wife Jennifer of Apex, NC and Catherine Cavanagh and her husband Robert of Iron Station, NC; his grandchildren Ryan Langfeldt, Keira Cavanagh, Amanda Cavanagh, and Nicholas Langfeldt; His sisters Kippy VandeWalle, Ann Boettcher, and Dorothy Geary; and his ex-wife Caroline Langfeldt.
The memorial service will be held at James Funeral Home (10520 Arahova Dr, Huntersville, NC) at 2pm on Friday June 1. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to East Bay Innovations San Leandro, CA.
