I, like Ernie, remember John from high school when he captained our golf team to an "almost undefeated" season. Since I was the #4 (last) man on the team, he took me under his wing as he was a very competitive, but a compassionate and caring person My sympathy and prayers to his family.

I was deeply saddened to hear about John through this obituary. I have not seen him since 1960 when we graduated from high school. But I remember a lot about those times since John and I played on the high school basketball team together for three years. He was a great player, one of the best on the team and I always admired him for his athletic skills and valued the friendship we developed over the years. We even play together in the summer league.

We have so many memories of times spent with the Gromko family. John out in his mower every night cutting off that 1/4 inch of grass that grew during the day! John running down the hill at midnight with a blow up boat because someone was yelling for help at Stevie’s pond! Both John and Linda always ready with a helping hand or a prayer when you needed it or even if you didn’t need it they would be praying for their neighbors. John had his moments but he still was one of the good ones and will be missed .

My condolences to all of you in the Gromko family...I loved hanging out with John at the house in North Andover and I always remember his supportive, encouraging words. John was always smiling. It was a pleasure to get to know him through Daryl Solomonson, and I enjoyed his wit and his competitiveness on the golf course. My condolences and prayers to John’s family.
I will remember John for several items but one in particular. When I was told I had cancer, he was one of the first to call. He simply said “I really don’t know what to say but I wanted to call so you know I care”. God’s blessings on the family as you remember, reflect and celebrate his life. Rich VH
