John A Volkmar's Obituary
John “Jack” Alfred Volkmar, 90, of Cornelius, NC passed away on March 13, 2019 at Novant Medical Center Huntersville.
He was born on February 18, 1929 in Greece, NY and the son of the late Alfred and Aurelia Siebert Vokmar of Greece, NY. He joined the Greece Ridge Volunteer Fire Department at age 18 in Greece, NY. He became the fire chief of the department and a Commisioner of the Fire District until 1981 when he, his wife and son moved to Charlotte, NC. He was part owner of Al Volkmar and Sons, a construction company in Rochester, NY until 1981 and then was hired as a construction foreman at Carmel Country Club in Charlotte, NC where he retired at 65, but stayed on as equipment operator. He retired at 81 years of age and enjoyed bowling and golfing.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carol Cuvelier Volkmar; four children, Stephen Volkmar and wife Marion of Germany, Kathleen Arreola and husband David of Fairborn, OH, Teresa Mattice and husband Tim of Rochester, NY, and Thomas Volkmar and wife Cynthia of Goose Creek, SC; brother, Kenneth “Butch” Volkmar and wife Beverly; beloved brother-in-law James Cuvelier and wife Sally of Big Island, VA; three grandchildren, Chris, Emily and Anthony; and three great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, March 18, 2019, at 2:00 PM, at St. Mark Catholic Church in Huntersville. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service, 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, in the church narthex.
Burial with Military Honors will be held on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, at 11:00 AM, at Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury, NC.
