Judy Sossamon Hicks' Obituary
Our dear Judy met the Lord that she loved on Thursday, November 8, 2018. She was surrounded by the family she so dearly loved and who so dearly loved her.
Judy was born on June 29, 1953 to John and Hazelene Sossamon. She attended North Mecklenburg High School where she found the love of her life, Frankie Hicks, whom she married on July 31, 1970. During the past 48 years of her marriage, Judy welcomed into her heart her daughter, Judy Carol, and her son Daniel. Later her joy was expanded through the birth of her grandchildren: Malinda, Ashley, and Joseph. Recently she was blessed with the arrival of her great-grandchildren: Joel and Audrey. Judy loved family and treasured each member of hers.
The hallmark of Judy’s life was generosity and joy. She never met a stranger, child, or dog that failed to receive her attention. She always gave from her heart as she performed as the clown, “Shine”, and as Mrs. Claus in the Davidson Christmas celebration. She entertained and educated children at Shearers Presbyterian Church during the children’s time, loved singing in the choir, and she gave comfort to others by serving on the Bereavement Committee there. As a graduate of CPCC, Judy brought comfort and healing to many as a home-health Physical Therapist Assistant and she loved her patients while she gave them her all. Judy exercised her gift of hospitality as she welcomed our family for a Thanksgiving celebration each year, and opened her home for New Year’s and many other family meals so everyone could enjoy being together. Her cooking skills were unparalleled and we will miss the buttermilk and chocolate buttermilk pies, chocolate cakes, relish trays, cheese balls, and vats of turkey gravy.
Judy was a talented artist. She painted beautiful murals on her children’s walls, created masterful quilts, enjoyed the adult coloring books, and beautifully made her house a home. She also enjoyed collecting snowmen, and tea sets – both of which are evident in abundance in her home.
She was an avid camper, enjoying the many camping trips with her husband and others to Stone Mountain, the beach, and other locations. She was looking forward to many adventures in the camper her husband remodeled, and had hoped to travel to see beautiful places.
Judy was a remarkable person. She was full of joy and laughter. She was quirky and generous. Judy will be greatly missed by her surviving family: husband, Frankie Hicks; children: Judy Carol Stewart, and Daniel Hicks (Linda); grandchildren: Malinda Merolli (Lance), Ashley Anderson (Alex), and Joseph Hicks; great grandchildren Joel and Audrey Anderson, Christiana and Jenny Merolli; her siblings: Janet Hinson (Marvin), Jane Ann Ervin (Gary), Joni Pressley (Randy), and Jonathan Sossamon (Leesa) as well as her many nephews, nieces and their children.
She has now been reunited with those who preceded her in death: parents: John and Hazelene Sossamon, and great granddaughter: Annalise Nicole Anderson.
