Dear Becky, Elisa, Erika, and Jay,
My heart breaks this morning with the news of Julius’s passing. Julius was truly one of a kind, and I feel so fortunate to have worked alongside him for 13 years. I still share stories of our travels together — including the time he convinced me to try sushi (even though I don’t like fish). He encouraged me to try tuna sashimi, and once it was in my mouth, I couldn’t swallow. But Julius didn’t give up — in Madison, he persuaded me to try eel. I was, unsurprisingly, not a fan!
What made Julius so special was his rare ability to connect with people — both one-on-one and through his speeches. His motto, “It’s another beautiful day in Superior, WI,” truly changed how people felt about the community. His leadership at UW–Superior and with the Chamber transformed the city, but even more importantly, his enthusiasm helped people believe that Superior was worthy of investment and pride.
With deepest sympathy,
Jill Petsel
