Lexey Clarkson's Obituary
Lexey Ruth Clarkson, 30, of Charlotte, passed away Friday, November 17, 2023.
Lexey was born in Griffith, Indiana and moved to North Carolina in 2010. She participated in Special Olympics while at Vance High School/Chambers High School. She was an excellent swimmer.
Lex was a friend to everyone she met and greeted everyone with a big smile and a twinkle in her eyes. Upon meeting her, many people quickly recognized that, though she used a wheelchair and communicated in an unconventional way, she was very perceptive and engaged with what was going on around her.
Lex delighted in food. She was a connoisseur of chicken fingers dipped in ranch dressing, fettucine alfredo, chocolate cake, and concession stand hot dogs. Lexey loved being out on adventures with the family at softball games from Texas to Minnesota, Colorado to Florida and vacations to San Francisco and Salem, Massachusetts.
She loved hugs. She loved having “lunch buddies,” especially at Red Robin and Azteca. Her lunch buddies were most frequently her mom and dad, sometimes joined by siblings or her best friend, Shelby. She loved pink, purple, and sparkly things; Lizzo, Pink, and Bruno Mars; and going shopping, to the movies, and to get her hair and nails done.
Lex had a great sense of humor. She was most fond of physical humor. She laughed every time someone sneezed or said “ow;” she delighted in laughing when able-bodied people stubbed their toes, bumped into something, or tripped. She regularly cracked jokes by finding creative uses for the programmed phrases on her voice (her adaptive communication device). One of her favorites was to ask “Can I have a hug?”—her most common question—at moments when she knew people couldn’t. She thought it was hilarious to say “knock, knock” and then just never finish the joke.
She is survived by her parents, Charles and Jo Ellen Clarkson; her siblings, Nick Clarkson and Lyndley Clarkson of St. Petersburg, FL; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The family will hold a private visitation on Monday, November 20 at 2:00 p.m. at James Funeral Home in Lake Norman.
The family would like to thank Lexey’s friends for all their kind offers of support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those wishing to honor Lex’s memory invite someone to be their lunch buddy: invite someone in your circle who could use some support to join you for lunch, eat something delicious, enjoy each other’s company, and before you leave, if you’re so inclined, give them a hug and send some love to Lexey. If you’d like, you can close with her favorite saying, “Have a super sparkly day!”
