Lillian Smelser Hulen's Obituary
Mrs. Lillian Hulen, 91, died peacefully at her home in Huntersville, NC August 27, 2014. She was the last surviving member of her seven brothers and sisters. She was born March 4th 1923 in Harrogate Tennessee to Alfred and Martha Ann Smelser. She is preceded in death by her late husband Raymond D Hulen and granddaughter Leeann M Samples. She is survived by her daughter, Lynne M Hulen; son James R Hulen and wife Rima; son Ronald S Hulen and wife Linda; grandchildren: Lisa Hulen, Stephanie Wilson and husband Jeremy, Kimberly Sayed and husband Yasser, Ronnie Hulen and wife Stacey; Don Samples husband of Leeann; great grand children Katie Samples, Bella Samples, Sean Stanley, Kaylee Wilson, Gabriella Wilson, Sarah Al-Zaid and Jacob Al-Zaid.
After graduating from Karns High School, she went on to business college and graduated in 1940. In 1957, after having raised her family, she went to work for the Knoxville Retail Credit Bureau eventually becoming the office manager. In 1976, she relocated to Charlotte and became an Assistant Vice President at American Credit. When American Credit was acquired by Barkley’s American, she became their Secretary/Treasurer and Manager of their Consumer Leasing Division until her retirement in 1989. Since her retirement, she has worked as a volunteer for the North Mecklenburg Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, she served as the Interim Town Manager and town grant administrator of Huntersville, NC from 1991 to 1995.
A graveside service will be held at the Huntersville Presbyterian Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 30, 2014. A reception will immediately follow in the James Funeral Home Community Room.
