Lorena Hobart's Obituary
Lorena Kay Jones Hobart, 83, passed away on March 20, 2025 in Davidson, NC surrounded by her loving family.
Lorena was born in Kansas City, MO, and lived in Missouri and Virginia before residing in Elkton, MD for 26 years, and North and South Carolina for 22 years. Lorena attended Park College (now Park University) in Parkville, MO after graduating high school. There she enjoyed playing intramural sports including volleyball, basketball, and softball.
After attending Park College Lorena moved to the Washington D.C. area where she worked as an administrative assistant while pursuing her independent craft business. During this time, she met her husband, Charles “Charlie” Hobart. After their marriage in 1972, Charlie and Lorena moved to Richmond, VA to operate an American Handicrafts store. Here, their daughter Katherine was born. After several years the family made their way back to Charlie’s hometown or Elkton, MD.
During her time in Maryland, Lorena was active in Girl Scouts as a parent and troop leader. She was also an active supporter of the Elkton High School “Gold Brigade” Marching Band. She retired from the University of Delaware in 2001, where she worked in several departments including Civil Engineering and Marine Studies.
In 2001, Lorena moved to North Carolina to be closer to her grandchildren. She made her home in a few different parts of North Carolina including Hendersonville, Huntersville, and Mooresville. She spent several years in Mooresville and was very active at Williamson Chapel UMC. She often spoke fondly of the people there and of the many experiences she had. She was very active with their Prayer Shawl ministry there.
After a while experiencing North Carolina and drawn by the various activities, she moved across the border into South Carolina and to the over 55 community of Sun City. There she continued making crafts, kayaking, traveling, and driving her golf cart all around Pod Z. She enjoyed making Chrismon ornaments and worshipping at Faith Presbyterian Church.
In 2021 Lorena moved to Davidson, NC to join the community at The Pines. While there, she made several friends among residents and staff. Rummikub games and making paper birthday boxes were a couple of her favorite pastimes there.
Lorena enjoyed creating many types of crafts, and her entrepreneurial spirit remained throughout her life. Within the family, who were often recruited for various craft fairs and sales, that if “one is good, 50 is better” when it came to creating and crafting.
Lorena’s passing is preceded by her parents, Gilbert and Dorothy (Mason) Jones, her brother Norman Jones, and her husband, Charles Hobart. She is survived by her daughter Katherine “Katy” Hurd (Huntersville, NC) and son-in-law Michael Hurd. And grandchildren Emily Hurd (Boone, NC) and Charles “Ike” Hurd (Huntersville, NC).
