Marie Marshall Thomasson's Obituary
Marie Marshall Thomasson, age 103, of Huntersville, died peacefully in her home on February 6, 2026.
Marie was born in Stanly County, North Carolina, August 5, 1922 to Lester Marshall and Dott Turner Marshall. Her father died when she was 18 months old, and she grew up with her mother and her sister, Marguerite, in Richfield, NC during the Great Depression.
She graduated high school early and attended Pfeiffer Junior College at 16 because nursing school wouldn’t allow admission until she was 18. She graduated from Presbyterian School of Nursing at age 20 and worked for a while until she joined the Army Nurse Corps in World War II. After she left the Army she met Andrew Cash Thomasson, a widower with two young daughters, Susan and Jane. They were married in 1947. After eleven months of marriage, their son Carl was born, propelling her from singlehood to a mother of 3 within a year. When Carl was two she spent most of a year in a sanatorium on bedrest for tuberculosis. Their daughter Alice was born in 1959.
They lived in Charlotte until 1968 when they moved to the Long Creek community. Marie was the triage nurse for McLean Pediatric Clinic for 25 years, providing support and telephone advice for thousands of parents. She spent busy years working, mothering, and freezing and canning produce that Andy grew.
She was a member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church for 56 years and a 40 year member of the Mecklenburg Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Marie had the unique ability to make everyone she communicated with feel heard and special. She kept her interest in others until the very end of her life. “Do you know any news?” was part of every phone conversation. She was the gatherer and sharer of family updates. She kept in touch with those she cared about through calls and cards. She did not judge but accepted people where they were. You knew where you stood with her and you knew what she wanted. She loved fresh flowers. Mail time was one of her favorite times of the day. She was grateful and determined to make the most of all that she had. She taught us by example to take One Day at a Time. She will be deeply missed.
She was predeceased by husband Andrew (2004), sister Marguerite Shannon (2016), and daughters Jane Gordon (2023) and Susan Marshall (2026). She was the last of her generation in both the Thomasson and Marshall families.
She is survived by children Carl Marshall Thomasson and wife Susan, daughter Alice Marie Thomasson and husband Phil Thompson and son-in-laws Jim Gordon and John Marshall. She had 10 grandchildren: Katie (John), Jenny (Jimmy), Elizabeth (Bryan), Amy (Will), Andrew (Cheryl), Michael, Emy (Valerie), Duncan (Amanda), Calvin (Dominique) and Lydia; 11 great-grandchildren: Kimberly (Caleb), Wil (Tabitha), Justin, Aidan, Kendall, Nina, Kalista, William, Malia, Eliza, Eleanor; and 2 great-great grandchildren: Catherine and Matthew. She leaves behind numerous beloved nieces, nephews and many dear friends. She enjoyed your calls, visits, cards and letters more than you realize.
We extend our deepest thanks to the circle of caregivers who became family. Their care allowed her to remain in her home over the past 3 years: Gail, Ruby, Juanita, Sheila, Lynn, Amanda, Anna, and Marie. We deeply appreciate her Hospice of Iredell County team…Teresa, Beth, and Ginny. Her life was enriched by all of you.
