Martha Lucille Gamble White "Doogie"'s Obituary
Martha Lucille Gamble White, age 92, died on Sunday, January 6, 2019, at her residence in Davidson, NC. She was the daughter of James Franklin Gamble and Mamie Ella Goodrum Gamble. She grew up on Torrence Chapel Road in Cornelius. She graduated from Cornelius High School and attended Kings College in Charlotte before beginning her career with Southern Bell.
Martha married AJ White from Davidson at the end of WWII and they lived on Selwyn Avenue in Charlotte. They owned a home at Windy Hill Beach where they fished and enjoyed the sun. They were avid Davidson College basketball fans and attended both home and away games with their friends, Rock and Eugenia Deaton after they retired in the 1970s. AJ and Martha moved back to North Mecklenburg county and lived in the Lake Norman area.
After AJ’s death, Martha moved to the Pines in Davidson where she was a member of their choir, The Pinetones. Martha loved doing jigsaw puzzles, word searches and crocheting. She was famous at The Pines for her vegetable sandwiches. Martha remained a supportive fan of Davidson College basketball, attending her last game this past Saturday night before her death. She also attended Bethel Presbyterian Church her entire life.
In addition to her parents and her husband, AJ, she was preceded in death by all of her eleven siblings. Surviving her are two sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.
