Martin Asa O'Loughlin's Obituary
Martin Asa O’Loughlin, age 95, passed away peacefully at Abernethy Laurels in Newton, North Carolina on October 23, 2018. Martin was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 17, 1923, the son of Martin and Grace O’Loughlin.
As a young man he served in the United States Army during World War II including the European theater of war. He also served in the Air Force Reserves throughout the Korean War. While stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, he met and later married Geraldine Long. They were completely devoted to each other for the seventy-four years of their marriage.
The couple lived in Kettering, Ohio, until 2017 when they relocated to the retirement community of Abernethy Laurels to be closer to family.
Marty worked his entire career for General Motors at the Moraine plant.
Throughout his adult life he was dedicated to the work of the Dayton Antioch Shrine reaching the level of a 32nd Degree Mason. He was very active in Shrine activities and was a member of the Pipers and Drum Unit with whom he loved marching in countless parades. Marty and Gerri made many friends and shared special social events which made for lasting memories.
Marty will always be remembered by his North Carolina nephews as a loving Uncle who, by example, taught them the values of love, patience, integrity, and loyalty: and made a lasting positive impact on them as well as their children.
Marty was preceded in death by his wife, Gerri O’Loughlin; his parents, Martin and Grace O’Loughlin; sister, Mildred Nyholm; sister-in-law, Mary (Kay) Schroeder and her husband, Milton.
Marty is survived by five nephews and three nieces.
