Mary Sue Milton's Obituary
Mary Sue Mock Milton, 82, of Davidson, formerly of Charlotte and Montreat, died peacefully on November 26, 2011, surrounded by her three children. She was born in Washington, DC, the first child of her parents Joseph Edgar Mock and Marguerite Cloud Mock. She and her sister Peggy grew up in Richmond, Virginia, where she graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School before earning a degree in Psychology from Westhampton College.
She was proud to serve in the United States Marine Corps for thirteen years. She was stationed in Quantico, VA, Parris Island, SC, Honolulu, HI, New Orleans, LA, Camp LeJeune, NC and Washington, DC. Her duties included being in charge of her base’s Recruit Barracks, extensive travel to recruit women and being a Platoon Leader, instructor and Commanding Officer in the Women Officer’s Training Company. At age 32 she became the youngest person to be awarded the rank of Major and she returned to Parris Island as the Executive Officer of the Women’s Recruitment Training Battalion.
At this time she also met and married the love of her life, her devoted husband Dr. Cecil Jerome Milton. The two were wed December 1, 1962, and Mary Sue was honorably discharged the following year when she was pregnant with their first child. The Miltons moved to Charlotte, NC in 1963, where they raised their three children, Tom, Susan and Julia. Cecil enjoyed a successful practice in orthopedics.
Mary Sue enjoyed tennis, swimming, reading, gardening and playing bridge with friends. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served on the board of directors of the Charlotte History Museum. She was an active member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church, where she served as both a Deacon and as the President of the Women of the Church. A church retreat in 1979 led her to Montreat, where she spent many summers and weekends with her family.
She is survived by her husband, Cecil Milton of The Pines at Davidson, NC, her son Tom Milton, his wife Stuart and children Maggie, Frazer, Bill and Jack of Charlotte, NC, daughter Susan Moriceau and her husband Laurent and children Ben and Will, of Charlotte, NC and daughter Julia Corley and her husband Kent of Hillsborough, NC, as well as her sister Peggy Dobyns of Fairfax, VA and her children and their families and dear friend Annie Mae Hailey of Charlotte, NC, as well as many other relatives and friends.
A memorial gathering will be held on Monday, November 28 at 1:00 PM in the Living Room at The Pines of Davidson, 400 Avinger Lane, Davidson, NC 28036, 704-896-1100. Mary Sue’s ashes will be interred at Montreat Memorial Garden during a private family ceremony.
