Merle Potuzak's Obituary
Merle Ann Potuzak, 78, passed away on January 6, 2023 at Preston House Memory Care, Charlotte, North Carolina.
Merle was born March 25, 1944 to Catherine Grotheer and Frank Hasenmeyer in Mineola, Long Island, New York. She is preceded in death by her parents, stepfather William Goedtel, and husband Joe Potuzak, Sr. of Cornelius, North Carolina. She is survived by son Joe Potuzak, Jr. and wife Michelle of Huntersville, NC, grandchildren Megan and Michael, and brother Kenny Hasenmeyer of Setauket, NY.
Merle graduated from New Hyde Park Memorial High School, New Hyde Park, New York where she was a proud Gladiator Twirler. She married her husband following high school and they lovingly raised their only son. They started and managed two businesses, Suffolk Fleet Service and Suffolk Snow Removal in Long Island, New York where Merle handled bookkeeping and administrative affairs. They retired to Punta Gorda, Florida where they opened an ice cream store to the delight of children young and old. Later, they relocated to Cornelius, NC to enjoy their grandchildren.
Merle was kind and generous. She loved her family, life-long friends, and caregivers. Merle liked country line dancing and enjoyed teaching others. Merle and her husband regularly traveled to the western U.S. where she enjoyed visiting family and friends, site seeing and learning new dances.
The family would like to thank the staff at Preston House Memory Care and Hospice and Palliative Care of Lake Norman who provided loving care, support, and friendship to Merle.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at James Funeral Home in Huntersville NC and will be livestreamed. The Visitation will be at 10 a.m., the Service will be at 11 a.m., and Inurnment will follow at Northlake Memorial Gardens.
