I am shocked to hear of Mike's death. I first met Mike some years ago when I accompanied him and his friend Preston Aldridge when they visited the UK some years ago before the pandemic. We visited Edinburgh, York Minster, Durham Cathedral and the Palace of Westminster in London as well as Hadrian's Wall. Since that time, we have corresponded regularly by email and were firm friends although separated by the Atlantic Ocean. I had hoped to see them both again but now both have passed on. My sincere condolences to Stephanie and all his family and friends in the USA.
I wish to express my deepest sympathy to Stephanie and the entire Amick family. What a shock to learn of Mike’s death. What a unique guy! His intellect, curiosity, wit and tenacity
served him well to experience a full life.
I was fortunate to become acquainted with Mike by association with my husband, George. George Moss, Tom Childress and Mike Amick were Catawba College classmates who nurtured and grew a tight-knit, loyal, life-long friendship. Their antics, experiences and accomplishments could be incorporated into a must read novel! The stories the three of them could tell with animation, laughter and some embellishment.
This earthly bond was broken eight months ago with George’s death. Mike honored his friend by serving as a pallbearer along with Tom. Who could ever imagine that Mike would be leaving us in just a very short time.
Mike was always full of surprises; so I suppose this would please him to slide away so peacefully with no drama.
Mike served as best man for George at our wedding at Dunnottar Castle in Stonehaven, Scotland. Oh, what fun we had with Mike and Stephanie during this adventure.
Mike, I was blessed to become your friend. I shall always remember your smile, laughter and mischievous twinkle in your eye.
You were loved by George and me.
Mike was my brother-in-law. We met almost 30 years ago. He liked drinking wine, discussing politics and he had a special interest in the Romans. The first two interests (wine and politics) we had in common, I never really understood his passion for Roman history.
He loved reading and was well informed about what was going on in the world. One of the great things about Mike was that he respected people who had different opinions than he had. He was always curious to hear about other points of view.
He also had a great sense of humor. He liked talking to people, all kinds of people, even complete strangers.
We had a tradition to go out for dinner every first Tuesday of the month. Always at the same restaurant, Café Monte in Charlotte, where the bottles of wine are half price on Tuesday. I always looked forward to our dinners. I will miss Mike and our dinners dearly.

Mike and I met while attending Catawba College in the 1960's where we traveled in the same circle of friends. Following graduation, I our careers followed different paths, causing us to lose touch. Years later after moving into the same Charlotte neighborhood we reconnected and our friendship grew. We became good friends sharing lunches together, text messages, jokes, school memories and life experiences. I am grateful for the time we spent together and will truly miss my friend, Mike.
