Michael Quickel's Obituary
Michael Meredith Quickel died on September 17, 2021 in Huntersville, N.C., after a long decline following a 2019 stroke.
He is survived by his wife, Judith Bremer Quickel, his sons, James Browden Allen, III, and Michael Meredith Quickel, Jr., and his daughter, Eloise Quickel Hale. In addition, he is survived by the grandchildren he cherished McKenzie Quickel, Cooper Quickel, Mac Hale, Joss Allen and Justice Allen. He was predeceased by his parents Emart Winfred and Ellen Boggs Quickel.
Mike truly gave the shirt off his back to strangers and then offered what he had in his pockets and in his heart. His faith in God and his kindness to others defined his character throughout his lifetime, and it is a great comfort to us that he is now in heaven.
To us, he was Pop and he had the best stories. Growing up at the beach in Panama City, F.L., he was the Pelican Hero, that boy who saved the bird after it was caught in fishing wire. He was the grandchild who mowed his grandparents’ lawn. And the son who wrote letters home to his mother throughout his years at the University of Arkansas. But he was also the 16-year-old, drag racing on Friday nights before his parents caught him. The daredevil barefoot water skier and the favorite mischief-making Boggs cousin.
Pop was the 2005 Builder of the Year. He was the husband who so often held his wife’s hand and never paused when a new plant needed to be added in her garden. The dad who always said, “Just try it once.” The father patiently waiting as his child snuck in at 5am so he knew they were safely home. The Officiant during the family’s annual Easter egg hunt and a fierce competitor in the Gentleman Contests as he taught his grandsons about good manners.
There is a full net of friends and church family who love and respect him as intensely as he loved and respected them. From the small groups and Christmas galas at church to singing favorite hymns and weekend getaways with friends, he showed all of us what goodness meant, what steadfast love meant and how to be strong in the face of something hard.
In the final reflection of him, we can only say, job well done, Pop. Job well done.
The family is particularly grateful to the team at Olde Knox Commons for their two years of support. They, too, stood among us in the final hours, sharing tears and hugs.
Please join us at a memorial service on Thursday, September 23 at 7 p.m. at the Mosaic Church Hope Center. A visitation will be held from 6-7 p.m. in the church lobby. The church is located at 10624 Metromont Parkway, Charlotte, N.C.
