In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Danny Herring; aunt & uncle, Susie and Herbert Hawkins; and cousin, Jimmy Tallman.
Michael is survived by his wife of 33 years, Miriam "Susie" Harris Richards; daughter, Miriam Hendricks; son, Kenneth Harris; mother, Mary Lou Richards; siblings, Jacqueline Johnson, Donna Tallman (Mike) & family, Michael David Herring (Pam and family), Walter Herring (Debbie); grandchildren, Bridget Harris, Hannah Hendricks, Avery Key, Jeremy Harris, Sierra Harris, Amber Harris; great grandchildren, Malanie McIlwain, Iroh Harris-Jackson; nieces & nephews, Terry McGhee, Mary McGhee, George McGhee; uncles & aunt, Leona Richards, Elvin Richards, Wilburn Richards; cousins, Kenny & Linda Richards, Barbara Richards, and Tersa Richards; and many more loving family members.
Michael served honorably in the United States Marine Corps. After his military service he worked for Gliden Paint and later as a truck driver for Carolina Custom Trucking; there wasn't a motor around that he couldn't fix. In his spare time he enjoyed reading, working on cars and motors, being outdoors, camping, climbing mountains, and walking in nature where he would hope to see his favorite bird, the majestic Eagle. He was a great spirited man who never met a stranger, he would sometimes even stop to help a bystander who was having car trouble. Above all, Michael will be remembered as a very caring and loving husband, son, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who always put his family first.
A visitation, with military honors, will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025 from 2:00 - 4:00 PM at James Funeral Home of Huntersville.
