Mildred Davis' Obituary
Mildred Underwood Davis, 91, passed away July 30, 2013, at her home in Charlotte, NC. She was born December 18, 1921, in Mecklenburg County, daughter of the late Ralph Sidney Underwood and Reamer Neal Underwood. Mildred graduated from Paw Creek High School and attended Brevard College. She graduated from Charlotte Commercial College where she met her husband Kenneth Davis. After Kenneth served 3 ½ years in the Navy, during World War II, they married on May 18, 1946, beginning their wonderful 57 years together. Mildred retired from the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System, having worked for a number of fine principals as executive school secretary. She was a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Yountz-Hough Sunday School Class, and Circle #2. Mildred was a member of Long Creek Chapter #151 of the Order of the Eastern Star, having humbly received her 50- and 60-year service pins.
Mildred welcomed every opportunity to spend time with her friends and was always warm and kind to everyone she met. She enjoyed being surrounded by her family, good friends, and laughter. Mildred loved her children and family dearly, taking every opportunity to bring her family together, whether at reunions, holidays, fish-fries, barbeques, graduations, or weddings. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and mother-figure to loved ones. Her approach to life was putting others first. Even at the age of 87 she worked on a mission trip to Mexico, taking and serving supply boxes to children. She also enjoyed traveling, making new friends, and cherishing time with old friends.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Carr Davis, her sister Doris Underwood Groover, and son-in-law Mark Bennett Hefner.
She is survived by her children K. Neal Davis (Wanda), Woody Davis (Maria), Buddy Davis, and Jenny Ann Earnhardt (Kennie). Mildred had six grandchildren, Justin Davis (Shelton), Wesley Davis (Rachel), Natalie Davis, Christopher Davis (Amy), Alison Hefner Barnes (Bryan), Jason Hefner (Dana), and two great-grandchildren, Avery Davis and Henry Neal Davis. She is also survived by her brother Ralph Underwood, Jr., (Harriet), sisters Betty Berg (Bob) and Laura Coggins, and many nieces and nephews.
The family sincerely thanks Mildred’s doctors, devoted caregivers: Shelia Bogar and Jeanette Smith, church family, and the many friends who have given her encouragement, friendship, love, and endless prayers.
