Nolan Mackey's Obituary
Cornelius – Nolan Mackey, 79, passed away at home on December 13, 2015 after a long, courageous battle with PSP, Progressive Supranuclear Palsey. Nolan was a devoted husband to his wife of 58 years, Martha, a loving father and grandfather and a loyal friend to many. His life was a Christian witness to all who knew him. While the disease took his physical strength long ago, it never took his fighting spirit, compassion and thoughtfulness for others.
Born in Citra, Florida on February 13, 1936 to Theda Perry and William Arthur Mackey, Nolan joined the Army straight out of high school where he was in the 77th Airborne Special Forces division. It was during that time that he met his wife and best friend, Martha Ann Neel. He retired from Duke Power after 38 years of service where he was a Supervisor of Line Construction. Nolan had an affinity for cars, camping and doing things with his hands. He genuinely loved life, enjoyed telling stories and making people laugh. Nolan was a founding member of Lake Norman Baptist Church in Huntersville.
Nolan is survived by his wife Martha Ann Neel Mackey; children Darryl Mackey and wife Wendie, Janet Mackey Morgan and husband Tim; grandchildren Taylor and Bryce Morgan and Madison, Grant and Will Mackey; his mother Theda Perry Bennett; brothers Art Mackey and wife Juanita, and Stanley Mackey. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Elizabeth Neel Morgan and father William Mackey.
The family will receive friends at James Funeral home in Huntersville on Thursday, December 17 from 6:00-8:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at Lake Norman Baptist Church in Cornelius on Friday, December 18 at 2:00 pm with Dr. Bobby Blanton officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Zion Community Cemetery immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lake Norman Baptist Church, 7921 Sam Furr Rd., Huntersville NC., 28078.
