Oliver Waters' Obituary
Oliver Claude “Shorty” Waters, Jr. died Monday, August 8, 2016, at Olde Knox Commons. He was born in Rutherford County on December 21, 1928, to the late Oliver Claude Waters, Sr., and Vassie Cook Waters. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and retired after more than 30 years of service as a driver for Overnite Transportation Company.
Shorty was a member of Williams Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he served as deacon, elder, and Sunday School teacher. He enjoyed participating in church activities, telling stories, listening to music, and working puzzles. He is best remembered for entertaining folks with his harmonica playing. He was married to the late Janie Dildy Waters for over 50 years and was her faithful caregiver.
His is survived by his children, Lisa Fisher, and her husband, Don, Roy Baker, and his wife, Robin; grandchildren, Lindsay Fisher, and her fiancé, Kevin Bertovic, Jonathan Fisher, and Roxanne Baker; sisters, Joyce McFarland and Gay Bostic, and brother, Bill Waters. He was preceded in death by his siblings Elijah Waters, Callie Whitener Wright, Nell Edwards, Louise Lassiter, and Lillian Waters; and his beloved wife, Janie.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 11, 2016, at Williams Memorial Presbyterian Church, officiated by Rev. Christopher Vogado. Interment will be private, prior to the service, in the church cemetery. Visitation will follow the service.
