Phyllis Cunningham's Obituary
Dr. Phyllis Cunningham, 94, of Concord died January 17, 2018. She was born in Martinsville, IL on August 16, 1923 to the late William S. Cunningham and Rachel (Bach Cunningham). She graduated with a B.S. from the University of Illinois (1945), an M.A. from NYU (1949) and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa (1964). She worked from 1944-55 as a Women’s Physical Education Instructor at Meredith College in Raleigh. She then moved to Washington University in St. Louis where she was an Assistant Professor from 1955-58 and an Associate Professor from 1958-67. She was a professor of Women’s Physical Education at Northern Illinois in Dekalb from 1967-79. She served as department head. Dr. Cunningham retired to Concord in 1987.
She is preceded in death by sisters Patricia Jean Cruthis and Carmen Blair and brother Howard Cunningham, Attorney.
Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at 3 PM Saturday, January 20 at James Funeral Home in Huntersville with visitation to follow. www.jamesfuneralhomeLKN.com
