Raymond "Sonny" Sanders' Obituary
In Loving Memory of Raymond Karl (Sonny) Sanders, Sr.
Raymond Karl (Sonny) Sanders, Sr., 74, of Cornelius, NC went to his heavenly home on December 15, 2015 after a long battle against emphysema. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace.
Raymond was born on March 19, 1941 in Minden, NY. He was a faithful member of Davidson United Methodist Church where he attended as his health allowed. His love for God was evident in all of his actions.
Raymond was blessed with a large and loving family. He and his wife of 52 years, Doris, raised seven children with patience, discipline and love. They turned many heads by having such a large family and sacrifices were great, but they never failed to provide the needs for their family.
Raymond held many different jobs from farm hand to school bus driver. He retired from the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System as head custodian at Davidson Elementary School. He was known as a kind and gentle man who enjoyed life to its fullest. He loved being outdoors and would often be spotted on the streets of Cornelius on his scooter. He enjoyed fishing, camping, playing Wii games and watching western movies. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Raymond is survived by his wife, Doris; his sons Raymond Sanders, Jr. (Desiree) of St. Johnsville, NY, Randy Sanders (Kristy) of Mooresville, NC, Billy Sanders and Robin Sanders (Karla) both of Cornelius, NC, Timothy Sanders (Tena) of Cherryville, NC and Christopher Sanders (Anissa) of Mt. Pleasant, NC. 15 Grandchildren and 3 Great grandchildren also survive. He is preceded in death by his oldest son, Richard; his father and step mother, Raymond Issaac, Sr. and Mary Sanders; and his mother and step father Geraldine and Fred Whiteman. He also leaves behind numerous brothers, sisters, in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will receive friends on Friday, December 18, 2015 from 6-8pm at James Funeral Home in Huntersville, NC
Funeral service will take place on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at 2pm in James Funeral Home Chapel with burial immediately following at Mount Zion Community Cemetery. Rev. Rick Felts will officiate.
