Reinhardt William (Billy) Smith's Obituary
Reinhardt William "Billy" Smith, 71, of Charlotte passed away February 24, 2026 at Carolinas Medical Center after many months of illness. He was born on November 17, 1954, in Charlotte to the late J.L. Smith and Constance Gibbons Smith. The youngest of five children, he grew up on Selwyn Avenue, attending St. Anne’s and Charlotte Catholic. He attended DeVry Institute for a year in Atlanta, before returning home to join the family business, established shortly after WWII, Smith Floor Finishing, and was owner for many years. Billy was known as a master craftsman, and he performed his craft in many fine and historical locations in the Charlotte area. His passion was golf, whether playing or watching. He often attended area PGA tournaments and loved going to the Masters on occasion in Augusta. Billy was preceded in death by both of his parents, siblings Joanna and Albert Smith, brother-in-law Joe Lyons, and niece Joanna Lyons.
Survivors include his wife, Karen Grier Smith; step-daughters, Ashley, Kelly (spouse Chris) and Robyn(spouse Jason); grandchildren: Austin, Ayden, Hayley, Landyn, and Rylee; siblings, Madeliene Dassow (spouse Duane), and Connie Lyons;nephews, Patrick and Greg; nieces Jennifer (spouse Derrick) and Kelly (spouse Kevin), and Allison; great niece Faith, and great nephew Jonah.
A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, March 24 at Sharon Memorial Park with Rev. Dana Seiler officiating.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, his most favorite charity.
