Richard Callan's Obituary
Richard Harry Callan, 68, of Davidson, NC died Monday, January 5, 2015 at his residence.
Richard spent his 30 year career working for the Department of Defense, first at the Pentagon - DESLOG for 2 years. He then moved with his young family to Frankfurt, Germany to work for the Army Corp of Engineers for 4 1/2 years. They then moved back to Virginia where he worked for the Army Material Command - AMC until retirement. He worked for five years as a government contractor with AMC at Ft. Belvoir before moving to Davidson, NC, upon his wife's retirement in 2006.
Richard was very active as an elder in the Community of Christ Church, where he played the organ, sang in the choir and provided ministry.
One of his true joys in life was singing with the Alexandria Community Singers in Virginia and the North Mecklenburg Community chorus.
Richard was happiest spending time with his family and many friends. He always greeted everyone with a huge smile and open heart. He was always there to support and help anyone in need or share in their happy moments.
He was born on August 23, 1946 in Mercer County, NJ and was the son of the late Charles Harry and Sylvia Rubright Callan.
Survivors include his wife, Karen Dougherty Callan of Davidson; two daughters, Christy Callan Wood and husband James of Davidson, and Jennifer Lowe of Mooresville; two brothers, Dennis Charles Callan and Thomas James Callan; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 9, 2015, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at James Funeral Home, 10520 Arahova Dr. Huntersville.
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, January 10, 2015, in the James Funeral Home Chapel in Huntersville. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Community Cemetery in Cornelius.
Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society or the Diabetes Foundation.
