Richard "DJ" Joan's Obituary
Mr. Richard S. Joan, 80, of Huntersville, passed in peace Wednesday, May 23, 2018.
DJ as he was lovingly known to family and friends was a native of Pontiac, MI and spent most of his adult life in the Ann Arbor, MI area. He lived for a few years in Orlando, FL and most recently moved to North Carolina to be closer to family. He was a member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church and instrumental in establishing the La Escuelita youth learning program with his wife and several other church members. Over the years, DJ was active in Jaycees, Stamp Collecting Clubs, The Gift for Teaching and Sweepstakes Clubs that were local to him. DJ enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his grandchildren and sharing in their challenges and triumphs with his loving wife Kathy by his side. DJ was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army reserves, a retired school teacher and an ongoing educator on general life skills. He was preceded in death by his parents Sam and Evelyn Joan.
DJ is survived by his wife of 26 years, Kathy Joan and their children; Kaylee Baez (Jose), Stacy Staggs (Shane) and his daughters Cheryl Montoya (Morris), Cynthia Joan; grandchildren Michael, Gabriel, Sara, Emma, Julia and Sabrina. He is survived by his siblings Dorothy Hackett and David Joan and many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at Hopewell Presbyterian Church at 12 noon, Monday, June 11. Committal services will follow in the church cemetery. The family will visit with friends in the Family Life Center following the committal service. All are welcome to join the family on this day.
