Richard Jackson Stilwell Sr.'s Obituary
Richard Jackson Stilwell, Sr., 96, of Newton, North Carolina, passed away Sunday, September 1, 2024. He was born June 10, 1928, raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, son of Samuel Duncan Stilwell and Ila Belle Gough Stilwell. His birth mother, Della Mae Holler, died February 26, 1932.
Richard received an honorable discharge from the US Army after having served 1952-1955. He received a B.S. in Engineering from Elon College and achieved lifetime membership in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He accepted the Lord and was baptized into the family of Christ at First Baptist Church, Cornelius, where he remained an active member. He enjoyed playing golf and was an avid reader.
Richard was preceded in death by his daughter, Lynn. He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Peggy Jean Smith Stilwell; his children Jack (Terie) of Ocala, FL; Thomas (Cynthia) of Bay Village, OH; Carol Hamilton (Hoyt) of Clarkesville, GA; and Donna Richardson (Kevin) of Newton, NC. He was a dear Grandad to Jay, Dan, Ben, Carrie, Jamie, Wil, Travis, and Brett and 16 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, September 6, 2024, 11:00 am, at Abernathy Laurels, 102 Leonard Avenue, Newton, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.
